Somehow, the storyline runs through the Berklee School of Music in Boston where her older brother attends. Maybe I play middle brass in her brother's jazz quintet and she's there to hear us play at one of the on-campus venues.
She's a middle brass player as well but does a couple numbers with us as a vocalist. She's familiar with the arrangements because she performed with her brother before he graduated from secondary school and came to college in the states.
The next time I meet her, after Berklee, is at winter tryouts for the Santa Cara Vanguard. It's also the first time we've been together without family and we sit in at each other's auditions for moral support.
The auditions go well for both of us and she departs from the West Coast for Christmas with her family in Paris. But there's a mutual sense that we'll find each other again in the spring when rehearsals begin for the summer tour.
