I want to write the kind of stuff that really needs to be written. The stuff without which a complete picture of the world, as it is or as it was, cannot be had by anyone.
To do that requires a belief that you're the only one who's seen it from a particular perspective, understood it or felt it in a particular way.
I know that's an extraordinarily subjective way of looking at things, but think of that Chinese addage about the death of an old person, that it's like the burning of a library.
I guess I'd go a step beyond that by saying that it doesn't have to be an old person to be true. (Besides which, in some cases, we'd simply be shuffling through an endless catalog of bitterness and defeat.)
That what the writer or other artist needs to do is to take that crucial step, past our understanding that each life is absolutely unique, to an affirmation in our art that it's absolutely, shiningly, brilliantly true...
