Buried in our attic is a cheap, metal, two-drawer file cabinet that I bought many years ago to store product warranties, tool catalogs, project drawings, tax documents, and all the miscellaneous and assorted crap that comes into one's life and simply has to be saved. In other words, everything which, if viewed objectively, would immediately be put through a shredder and used to insulate the attic where it's been taking up space.

But as part of the on-going project to reclaim my life, I'm bringing the cabinet back downstairs, refinishing it to blend with the neutral dining room interior, and using it to store the revised resumes, college catalogs, and letters of inquiry that I'll soon be sending to various schools, businesses, foundations, and government offices.

Among the latter will be Onondaga Community College, which has the Mechanical Technology program I'm interested in; J.P.W. Riggers, the local business which has positioned itself to be a major player in the construction of wind farm projects; T. Boone Pickens' alternative energy program, at PickensPlan.com; and the government's Department of Energy website.

These are uncertain times for all of us and, arguably, the worst possible time for a man, who should be poised for retirement, to be considering a new career. But what does seem certain is that the challenges before us require decisive action and that dire circumstances have, in fact, set the stage for the new voice and new vision thankfully being heard in our national conversation.

I want to be part of that conversation and to participate in the rebuilding process which, as of this Tuesday, will be laid out before us. For our nation, and the rest of the world, it will begin with an historic inauguration in Washington. For myself, it'll start with a bit of my own history being brought down from the attic...
