Meanwhile, on the other track, things are going pretty well. Two weeks or so in, and I've only missed one day--and that was due to a widespread electrical storm. Which, you may have heard, can pose a greater threat to personal health than missing a training day.

Once again, I got to the high school a bit late today, due to the daughter and the three-year-old "busy girl" being here for yard work again. Talulla and I stayed inside and had healthy snacks and read books and played with the trains while her mom worked her magic on the flower beds.

After they left, I changed into my fitness gear and went over to the track. Turns out that being an hour or so later than I might've preferred was actually a good thing. Either parks & rec or the school district was running a morning softball camp for girls, which was just about to wrap up when I finally got there.

I'm never sure what the rules are, for a given team or organization, so I either hang back and wait or find someone to ask. Some programs, like my grandson's soccer league, back in the day, are very strict about having anyone--even parents--inside the area where the activity is taking place.

In any case, I didn't have long to wait and was soon out on the track--in the baking heat--grinding out my 16-minute mile. Which, as I said, has been going quite well.

The pain I'd noticed in the left ankle has almost entirely subsided and I actually think that my breathing has continued to improve.

Maybe the latter is wishful thinking--because COPD is a progressive condition--but with no cigarette smoke or other pollutants in my living environment, I seem able to draw a full, deep breath with increasing frequency and no crackle or rattle when fully inhaling or exhaling. Which is a huge improvement over where I was just 24--plus or minus--months ago.

Now, if I can just continue making progress on the mental and emotional aspects of the life I now have, well, maybe I'll come to fully appreciate this "extra" time that I seem to have been given.

Because there are still bumps in the road--and they can be brutal--and I need a deeply felt reason to keep making my way over them...
