Every day, I do one set each of 12 basic exercises. Of the 12, eight were prescribed by the physical therapy team which directed my rehabilitation following back surgery. Two others were prescribed by a physician to rehab a frozen shoulder joint which I had some years back. And the final two, pushups and toe-rises are strengthening exercises that I've always done for "head-to-toe" fitness.

By design, it's a very brief and not very rigorous routine. I want to keep it short so that I'm not tempted by excuses that it's too time-consuming and it's relatively easy so as to avoid possible injury to deconditioned muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Basically, I have two reasons for pursuing this. The first is to extend the period of my life during which I can help raise my grandson. The second is to be prepared for the opportunity or necessity to either rejoin the workforce or to resume a volunteer role in either the local schools or the American Red Cross.

Given the way that family life, as well as life in the broader community, seems to be headed, I think it's prudent and worthwhile to be prepared, to be ready and able to contribute whenever, wherever, and whatever might be needed...
