Sep. 21st, 2007 09:45 pmrealizing that you've forgotten to carry facial tissues, for your outings with a small child you haven't lived with for a while, may be a practical tip-off that there are likely other, more subtle things that you've forgotten as well...

Date: 2007-09-23 04:56 pm (UTC)I have a small tote bag for traveling with my granddaughter - snack size zip lock with DRY cereal/animal crackers - small bottle of water - wet wipes - small packet of tissues - selection of toys (have a small
Barbie with snap on clothes in another zip lock bag. And now that she's into mazes and dot-to-dot - a couple of those books with crayons. And stickers!!! Great for road trips...
Perhaps you would like to prepare a small backpack for the little guy - with a some of the above, a couple cars, transformers,
the girls also like "bendy things" -- chenille stems (formerly known as "pipe cleaners") and they are QUIET (except when they hold up their creations so you can see them in the rear view mirror.)
Before they were potty trained I also packed a change of clothes and some replacement "pull ups."
It's a whole new world now ....
When I was small, yea these many decades ago, my mom had a quart jar of soapy water with a wash cloth in it when we traveled.
Kids do require preparation... if you don't want to have to use your shirt tail for lack of a hanky. or whatever.

Date: 2007-09-24 01:21 am (UTC)and truly, these things are important for the sake of comfort, cleanliness and, perhaps most important, adult sanity. but, for whatever reason, i almost feel like i've experienced some regression in the way i handle our everyday adult/child interaction.
i distinctly remember a feeling of accomplishment with regard to child-rearing attitudes, skills, behaviors, etc. when my son and grandson lived with us previously. and i don't know if i'm a little hyper-sensitive because the lost lamb has been miraculously returned to the fold or if my responses are actually shaded with a bit of resentment over freedoms surrendered with the resumption of parenting.
but regardless, it's obviously a whole new ballgame for everyone, including my grandson, and i am committed to working very hard for a successful outcome. thank you again for sharing, on so many occasions, your experience and counsel on these matters.
