Fab-dabulous!

OMG, for the first time in for-effing-ever I have a book I'd rather read than eat for dinner. No, wait. You know what I mean. But seriously, this second reading of Amor Towles' Rules of Civility is just, well, in the words of Katie Kontent, "Fab-dabulous."

It calms me in the morning before I take my BP, but it's an alive and engaged kind of calm that makes me feel fully conscious rather than comatose. Which is how I normally have to be to get a decent, not-scary number on my little machine. (It was 114/67/62 this AM!)

However, I know if I'm gonna live to record tomorrow's vitals, I'm gonna have to hop down to the galley and make dinner. Which tonight consists of an LS chicken with cous cous casserole. No Pinot Noir, this time, but I've made it before and it too is "fab-dabulous."

Is it better? That's kinda hard to say, although the same things that endeared his prose to me in "A Gentleman"--the wonderful dialogue, the vividly-drawn characters, his dead-on evocation of period and place, are also very much present in "Rules."

One thing that does surprise me is how well he draws the women, one of whom is the protagonist, Katie Kontent. I really like her and her BFF Eve. And if you do happen to get the book, I'd be really interested in hearing your opinion on that.

And yes, of course, I'll be on the next flight outa here, lol...

OK, E, you can't share this with anyone else but, 160 pages into my second reading of it, I think it's the best book I've read this year. But that's just my opinion. And you can't tell anyone else, K?

You know me, I'll have to read it. Almost finished with "Gentleman..." and I also enjoy Towle's prose.
For sure will report back when I do read it.

Better come cook next week. Husband totaled car last night (he's ok, car is not) but need transportation to pick you up at airport. Lol

Oooh, nooo! Glad to hear he's OK! But sorry about the car. I haven't hitch-hiked a lot--mostly gave rides when it was in vogue in the 60s and early 70s--but maybe should add to my bucket list now. Thing is, I was gonna bring a live chicken. So it'd be fresh, you know...

Cars come and go. Actually so do husbands. The red tape really sucks. We are now at the mercy of the insurance companies. That's a great place to be, right?

Just saying in advance I can clean that chicken, but you have to execute it. And you'll have to sedate it to get it on the plane ;-)

Ya know, I wasn't expecting that, but in today's world anything can happen. Though maybe she could just sit in your lap. Our friend egg shell/Mary would not like chicken abuse.
