Grandson: "Poppa, do you think I could come over sometime and do some of those jobs we talked about?"

Me: "Sure kiddo, I still have the list I made out for you. I'll pay you 10 bucks an hour, but you've gotta leave your phone at home."

Grandson: "Oh, OK. But I didn't mean that you had to pay me."

Me: "Great! In that case, you can bring your phone, do the all the work, and I won't pay you a cent."

[We both laugh]...

That's so cool. Interesting, my going rate is $10 an hour too.

Hahaha, yeah, he came over today and earned $20.

While he was here, he looked at the two work benches we'd built and said, "You know, if I told anyone I'd built those, they wouldn't believe me."

And I said, "Well, that'd be their loss. And I want you to have at least one of them and any of the tools you might want from down here..."

Some years ago, I paid one of my grandsons by the job. I really miss him come spring as he learned how to gardening tasks easily.

Those benches will be in the kid's life forever ya know. It is a form of immortality for you.

Thanks, I'd like to think of them as part of my legacy to him. A sort of temporal reminder of what made us--at least during his childhood--kindred spirits.

I just hope I can last until he has a place of his own, so he has somewhere to put them...
