One Ride, One Fall, My Fault

About 8 miles into my ride this afternoon, I was approaching a stop sign at a thru street.

The problem, at that intersection, is that the line of sight to the left is somewhat obstructed by foliage, curves in approaching roadway, etc.

By the time I saw the oncoming vehicle, I was already at the stop sign and had to brake quite suddenly.

Unable to keep the bike upright as I attempted to dismount, I went down on my right side. Took the impact on right palm, elbow, and hip.

Was able to get up and finish my ride home.

Won't have to wait to see if I feel it tomorrow, because I'm feeling it now...

Yeah, thanks, I may do that. I dunno, I may be back to rethinking my riding/fitness routine. But don't really know where that might lead me...

Yup, no fun and a lot of small mishaps kind of adding up for me this year.

is there another route? Can you load the bike into your car and take it to Onondaga Lake (or somewhere else) I hope you are doing okay today.

Yeah, my grandson asked me the same thing and I probably could but I've currently got a route in the immediate neighborhood which has the right combination of hills and flats and straightaways to provide a really good workout and I really hate to give that up.

BUT. I've gotta be more careful, I've gotta figure out if I can overcome the quick dismount problem I apparently (make that obviously) have with this bike, and I suppose, ultimately, whether I can afford to keep on taking the risk that is inherent in road riding.

I've almost come to feel that I'd rather die than not do it but recent events have led me to conclude that I'd rather not die WHILE doing it, lol...

Yeah, doing OK, thanks.

Think I have a deep muscle bruise to the right hip/glute but have full range of motion, with no discomfort, in all limbs.

But it has brought me back to the possibility of some hard choices about future activities, a renewed awareness of the need to make responsible choices for myself going forward.

So sorry to hear this knowing how dear your riding is to you. So glad you weren't hurt worse. Lots of tough decisions and changes come with aging for sure. I know you'll find a good solution. E

Thanks, E. I keep telling myself that it's the small decisions, poorly considered, that are adding up to these problems/mishaps.

But I do know that, down the line a bit, I am gonna have to make a larger, and hopefully better decision about all of this.
