Bumper Sticker Logic

thisnewdayThis morning, Little Jay and I were driving home from the Shop City Veterinary Hospital. We'd been there to make an appointment for our two dogs who need flea baths and updated shots. I explained to him that the animal doctor would give us a time when we could bring them in, just like when his mom or dad made an appointment for him with the pediatrician.
At one of the traffic lights, we stopped behind a small pickup truck with Florida plates. Probably because I'm a northern liberal Democrat, I consider that relevant. On the back of the truck was a bumper sticker that said, "If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you're reading this in English, thank a soldier."
What this says, in effect, is that the survival and proliferation of Western Culture, throughout the world, depends not on its own inherent strengths but on the ability of our military to bludgeon others into accepting it as the universal medium of political, economic, and social advancement.
Must be that our English teachers did a lot better job than our social studies/world history teachers did...
