which was originally called Armistice Day in commemeration of the agreement ending World War I on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.

Remembered here with a recitation and brief explication of Hardy's poem "Drummer Hodge" as seen in The History Boys. The poem itself predates the Armistice, but the discussion following its recitation sheds an interesting light on such observances.

Also, herewith, my confession to having appropriated the idea for such a remembrance from my LJ friend, [livejournal.com profile] halfmoon_mollie . Which is another way of saying that it's good to have smart friends.
