About Her Wandering

thisnewdayThere is now a gate at the bottom of the living room stairs. It is bronze-colored steel, to match the decor of the downstairs rooms, and it's there to keep the youngest grandchild off the stairs and out of the upstairs bedrooms.
It had previously sat in its unopened box waiting for my once-talented, once-willing hands to put it in place. It was there for several weeks, that way, before the will to do so had been found and the stiffening back and the aching knees had been overcome and the tools brought up from the unfamiliar basement.
Having finally done all of that, it occurs to me: if you and I are to share this place, could you not just have spoken to the child, as you've sometimes spoken to me, about her wandering...
