A Motorhead's Anniversary
Jul. 12th, 2009 11:35 pmYesterday was the one year anniversary of my back surgery and I celebrated it by lying on the ground under our SUV to repair the rear brakes. As I told my wife - because I sense that from my first day out of the hospital I've been surrounded by doubters - this is the reason I maintain the strength and flexibility program prescribed by my physical therapists following the surgery. Because without it I'd never have been able to do the things I've done over the past two days.
For those who've never done it, working in a cramped, overhead space and exerting the kind of torque necessary to break loose rusted bolts, etc., requires some serious strength. Not to mention getting up and down a bazillion times to get tools, parts, etc. Admittedly, the process was slow and accompanied by lots of groans and I would never claim to be fit enough to work in a commercial garage again, but I did get the job done.
So, bully for me and many thanks to my surgeon, Dr. DiStefano, and my physical therapist, Julie. You did well by me and I think I can honestly say that I've kept up my end of the bargain...
