A couple of months after the back surgery that I had last July, I was told by two people familiar with my case that full recovery was usually a 12-18 month process. As it's turned out, this experience has given me real insight and appreciation for the incremental nature of the healing process.

One of the things that has helped me the most during this period of recovery, besides working hard at physical therapy and generally following the advice of the medical professionals supporting me, was focusing on the belief that as long as the healing process was still on-going there was a parallel opportunity for improved function through physical activity.

And I think this mind-set has worked well for me. An aggressive conditioning program has helped with the healing process and the on-going healing process has made possible improvements in conditioning and functionality. While there have been setbacks, including a couple of nasty flareups of the asthma/ chronic bronchitis diagnosed over the past winter, my overall health and quality of life have continued to improve.

Given that history, I'm truly not looking forward to the coming winter but, with one less smoker in the house and a year's experience dealing with the condition, I'm still hoping to maximize my recovery...
