thisnewdaySummer is ending. The past two nights have been chilly and the days less humid. It's rained off and on, all summer, but today it rained hard.
The state fair opened this week and when it closes the kids will be heading back to school. Little Jay will be in the first grade and I'll be there from time to time to meet parents, teachers, and classmates and to help him make friends.
I've gotten a tan from the times we actually made it to the beach. After the first few outings, to Green Lakes, Williams Beach and Oneida Shores, we settled on Verona, a small state park a few miles east along the shore from where my ex- and I first lived when we came to Central New York.
After while, the little boy and I settled into a routine. Two cold packs in the small cooler along with sandwiches, juice boxes, yogurt smoothies and chips, and we were out the door, with towels and sunblock in the Yankees backpack and sand pails and shovels in the back of the car.
We became sort of regulars there, Little Jay and I. Regretably, the summer that I'd envisioned, of sunny days and other kids for him to play with, never happened. But there's not much else that you can do when it rains so much and your phone calls are never returned. Even so, I did get a tan, the first in years, and we did have some fun.
I have a tan and the nights are getting colder and a solitary summer is coming to an end...
