Hospital Stories
Jan. 8th, 2012 10:06 pmHer Nurseliness didn't call for her ride home until after 8:30 this morning. When she got in the car, she said, "It was a brutal night. We were understaffed, as usual, and had two patients who coded and two going bad. We were so short that I had to use the NAs to run the codes.
We got to the one room and the woman arrested. So I just told them, 'YOU call the code, YOU get the crash cart, YOU record, YOU start compressions.' And the woman pulled through. I was surprised."
This is what's known as a "hospital story" and you hear them the morning after, during the ride home. Before your first coffee. Which is OK because they'll usually wake you up. And, presumably, allows the teller of it to go home and sleep.
I've been listening to them for almost thirty years, so I still needed the coffee when we got back to the house. From the bathroom, she says, "Three-thirty. Get me up at three-thirty. One more day of this and then I'm off for two days. Which day is good for you, to drive me to the casino?"
The two days off is unusual. The casino, not so much. We've been doing that for about thirty years as well...
