This One Thing

I keep hoping that like some great, slow ship, turning somewhere in the endless night, my son and his ex- will eventually find the maturity to put first in their lives the one they brought into ours.

To realize that they don't necessarily have to be together, except--for an absolute certainty and for the rest of their lives--in this one thing...

Our world has changed while we struggled for survival and to raise them.

Grandchildren are the future we are trying to protect or redeem.

We have no control. I find solace in prayer - surely God has the power to influence.

After all, we get to spend some time with the future, hopefully providing a better choice, if not a different choice.

it's definitely the privilege, of time spent with the little boy, that keeps me going. that, and the fact that i sometimes dare to hope that i'm doing a better job of it with my grandson.

still, i'd have to say that, when the parents were together, it was a little easier to feel that it was a privilege instead of a necessity. despite having felt put upon by their inconsideration.

i'm guessing there might be a lesson in that.
