thisnewdayFrau Daheim once told me that, "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions." I don't remember, now, what prompted her to say that. She was older than I was, a stately woman with a fashionably-coiffed crown of silver-grey hair.
I was twenty years old and dating her daughter at the time, so it might've been more appropriate for her to warn of driving under the influence of testosterone, on any road paved with my evil male intentions. But maybe she shared that particular wisdom with her daughter.
She might also have been referring to her own forebearance in not having had her son chase me off with his deer rifle, thus eliminating the possible need, later on, for her husband's shotgun. (Her daughter and I did eventually marry, and not under duress.)
But whatever her meaning or intent, both were lost on her daughter and me. Because, regardless of what might've been used in its construction, we ultimately drove each other down that proverbial road to Hell...
