Just Before Dusk
Jul. 10th, 2006 11:10 amEven the bitter, panhandling bums of Key West, who congregate on the corners just before dusk, and harass the tourists returning late to their hotels, are braver than I am about what they believe and smarter than I am about what they know.
They are there because, deep in their souls, they believe in the centuries-old romance of the place. That even such a marginalized existence, with its attendant poverty, instability, hunger and disease, is more of life than they could have in any other place.
How was it that I thought I was smart or responsible or brave by getting back on the plane and returning to a job where people disliked me simply because I did it best and which day by day crippled my body and destroyed my soul...
