Just Before Dusk

thisnewdayEven the bitter, panhandling bums of Key West, who congregate on the corners just before dusk, and harass the tourists returning late to their hotels, are braver than I am about what they believe and smarter than I am about what they know.
They are there because, deep in their souls, they believe in the centuries-old romance of the place. That even such a marginalized existence, with its attendant poverty, instability, hunger and disease, is more of life than they could have in any other place.
How was it that I thought I was smart or responsible or brave by getting back on the plane and returning to a job where people disliked me simply because I did it best and which day by day crippled my body and destroyed my soul...
