Little J came running downstairs while I was working in the kitchen. I knew it was him because he's the only one who can fly down stairs at that speed without killing himself. He'd been in his dad's room, playing the Wii, and this was clearly an emergency.
"Poppa, Daddy says to ask if we have four double A batteries," he managed to gasp.
Pretending indifference, I replied casually, "Wel-l-l, we have them but [pause] I can't give them to you."
Hardly believing what he was hearing, he said, "Why not?"
"Why, because I'm saving them for my favorite person in the whole world," I said.
"Well, that's me," he responded confidently.
"Oh, that's right," I said, as if surprised at having to be reminded of something so obvious.
Then I handed him the batteries and laughed to myself as he happily ran off.
