Transience
Apr. 21st, 2012 03:27 amLast night was the last indoor soccer practice of the season, for Little Jay and his teammates of the past four years. And today will be their last indoor game as a team. Because of the rules governing outdoor soccer for kids his age, the team divided into separate boys and girls teams last spring but practiced and scrimmaged together in anticipation of re-uniting for indoor soccer in the fall. This coming fall, however, the indoor league as well requires separate teams, so this will truly be their last game together.
I know that right now it probably doesn't mean that much to the kids. If anything, they're looking forward to the end of school in a few weeks and the beginning of summer vacation. And so it remains for their parents and grandparents to reflect on this as the first of many cycles of acquisition and loss that will occur for them as life continues and circumstances change.
I guess it's up to us, as well, to hope that this early experience of transience in our childrens' lives may help them to value more fully the friends and experiences that come their way and that they may learn through this experience to give the full measure of their energy and devotion to whatever enterprise they may choose to be part of.
Of course, we're not going to say that to them. Instead, we'll tell them to just have fun. And to thank the coach for all of his time and patience and for the pizza party that he and his girlfriend will throw for them at the end...
