Bumping the Walk
May. 17th, 2013 08:43 pmYesterday, I bumped the walk up to a mile and a quarter--with no apparent ill effects. I've been religious about the stretches between each lap, as well as before starting and after finishing. However, I think it's just as likely that my badly deconditioned muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons are benefiting from the short rest breaks enforced by this routine as much as from any "stretching." That and the possibility that, after 2-3 weeks, I'm finally seeing some results from the conditioning itself.
Either way, I'm happy enough to feel good about the results but not enough to throw away these modest gains by doing something stupid. Like jogging the last quarter. Like I've occasionally thought about doing. As if I were once more young and indestructible. Like that spring day when I sensed the return of my road-conditioning and leaned the Cannondale too hard into a rain-slicked corner and crashed. And broke my hand and was saved from worse by my hundred dollar Bell helmet which sustained a fracture meant for me above the right eye socket.
Yeah, that kind of indestructible. Which probably makes it a good thing that I decided against the bike option this time. Because, in certain states of mind, even the learning enforced by pain can momentarily seem like it's surely meant for someone else in a different time and place...
