Harry Peak - Spoiler Alert
Nov. 4th, 2019 07:40 amIn Susan Orlean's The Library Book, which I'm now close to finishing, Harry Peak has just died from complications of HIV/AIDS. Harry, it turns out, was the lone suspect in the presumed setting of the LA Central Library fire.
But he was a whimsical, gentle, almost undefinable character, as elusive in his life and in Orlean's narrative as those first wisps of smoke detected in the fiction stacks of the soon-to-be-destroyed library.
And one of the most fascinating, even endearing attributes of Orlean's book is how she manages to both capture and release, to his own unfortunate destiny, this central character in her narrative.
With all of its stops and starts, its attention to the sometimes minute details of the daily operations of public libraries across the globe, I still recommend it. Without reservation...
