The sky over Central New York, at almost 10 o'clock this morning, is mostly cloudless and intensely bright. I haven't been outside, to know the ambient temperature, but the intense light of this mid-morning is teasingly alluring. Almost like, you know, a certain picture?

"Come outside," it says, "you won't even need a jacket--a tee shirt and shorts will be fine. You remember what summer is like, right? Well then, come out here and enjoy the light."

"Ignore," it goes on to say, "that the summer is past, that the leaves are fallen. Ignore that you're now old and often wear a jacket within the shelter of your own small house." It continues to tease, that way, like her picture.

Meanwhile, like a nightmare that we've somehow not awakened from but instead have begun to anticipate falling into, last night's weather forecast, a local station's "Live Doppler Radar with Wayne Mahar," teases as well around the edges of our consciousness: "snow, one to three inches, by tomorrow night..."

In an hour or so, after completion of the morning routine--BP check, hydration, inhaled medication, breakfast smoothie, oral hygiene, the brushing and combing of now-thinning but still dark, copper hair--I will, in fact, pull on a jacket and venture outside...
