Yesterday was the start of my second week of fitness walking and general exercise. The first three days of last week, I walked a very moderately-paced quarter mile. The next four days, I walked a moderately-paced half mile. Beginning yesterday, I increased that to three quarters of a mile, still at a moderate pace.

During the past week, I also worked at refining my flexibility, balance, and strengthening exercises. Following back surgery, four years ago, I had maintained a fairly intensive daily fitness routine developed during my 3-4 months of post-operative physical therapy. But after a couple of years, I gradually abandoned it due to the demands of other commitments, like working in my grandson's classroom, etc.

Last fall, however, I had actually written an abbreviated routine - using several of those same exercises - and had some success with toning, strengthening, and weight loss over a 2-3 month period. Then I contracted the flu, with respiratory complications, and following a prolonged recovery seemed to have lost the motivation necessary to resume training.

But more recently, deepening concerns over my grandson's situation has brought me to a new consideration of my own longevity and quality of life. So I began trying to reconstruct the routine I'd been doing in the fall, went out and bought the shoes I needed for the walking component, and basically hit the "restart" button on the whole process.

My goal has been to achieve somewhat the same balance between flexibility, balance, and strengthening that my P/T routine had evolved to in its final form. (Anyone who's been through that process knows that it starts with flexibility, then balance, then strengthening, and that it happens over a period of many weeks.)

Anyway, having made some minor adjustments during the past week, I've today made a couple of fundamental changes which I think will serve for the next few weeks.

That said, it's always "one day at a time" with these things. Which leads me to wonder if there's a local 12-step program for personal fitness. Because I'm obviously destined to be a lifelong friend of Ah-nold S....
