Gonna take it a little easy this morning. The grandson is finally off to his first day of school and it feels like a weight off of me as well. We also had a rather lengthy placement session at the Sports Centre for his Wednesday night "Fun" league and it was anything but, especially coming on the night before his first day of school.
Still, Jason and his Fusion team mates looked pretty good, considering the end-of-summer layoff, and it was easy to see why US Soccer recommends dispersing the upper-level teams for these informal leagues. And tonight, it's more of the same. His Fusion team has its first outdoor practice for the "Fall Friendly" league followed by their first game on Saturday.
Next week looks even more daunting with soccer events every night, Monday through Thursday. Syracuse University Men's Soccer has a home game on Monday, which means that the SU Soccer Academy, which they coach, is moved to Tuesday. However, they've asked that the Academy kids come to the game and serve as ball boys, which Jason has said he wants to do. Then Wednesday is the first "Fun League" indoor game and Thursday is their second Fusion practice, followed by their second game on Saturday.
Needless to say, we've already had the discussion about homework and outside reading getting done RIGHT after school EVERY day and then staying focused on preparations for whatever event is scheduled for that evening. I guess you can make a case for this being good preparation for what comes later in life, but I don't want to burn out his interest in the sport or take the fun out of being a kid.
The other side of it, based on my daughter's experience as a team gymnast, is that this is the simply the life these kids lead and I guess I don't have a problem with that as long as it's driven by the kid's interest and not the adult's own unfulfilled ego. So, after a morning off, we'll resume the grind and see where it gets us...
