Her Rising Up
Jan. 3rd, 2014 03:17 pmI'm pretty sure that, when my sister-in-law dies, there will be no obituary, no calling hours, no funeral. I'm pretty sure that she will just rise up on, what did they used to say, gossamer wings and pass beyond our reach, beyond our sight, like the fairest breeze of early summer.
And everyone who ever knew her will feel a sudden, inexplicable sadness which rends the heart and fills the eyes with tears, though none will fall. And something so profoundly good and fair will be gone from all of our lives that everyone will notice but few will understand.
Nancy took care of my step-brother through so much pain and loss that it seems incomprehensible that she did not lose her own soul in all the days and nights of raising up and making clean and lying down and all the myriad things that it took to maintain a shattered body and heal a wounded spirit.
I truly hope that the last thing he told her was that he loved her, that he would be all right, and that afterward she should live her life and find her own happiness...
