The Hardest Thing

Sometimes the hardest thing is to keep on working on something that you know has to be finished but which you also know isn't going to turn out just right, despite your best efforts.

And I sometimes think that the same can be true for the whole of a life...

The other side of it, I guess, is that when I look at my LJ friends one of the things I most appreciate about them is the effort they put into living their lives and the fact that they're willing to share that with us, with me.

Because in those moments of struggle I'm able to think of them and realize that, out of their efforts, the sometimes beautiful things that redeem our lives have come: the hand-drawn pictures, the ornamental glass, the jewelry. The words, the music, the new understandings we have of things.

And here and there, in our own life or someone else's, the beautiful child who will bring all of that forward into a new generation and, by their own efforts, add to it...
