In a few hours, while the rest of his Syracuse City School District classmates sleep in on the first official day of Spring Break, my grandson and I will be getting him ready for the first day of Syracuse University's youth soccer camp. And while it's something he's been looking forward to since it was first announced in mid-winter, the unsettled weather has made planning for this first big event of the outdoor soccer season problematic, to say the least.

Initially, the forecast was for temps mostly in the mid-forties and two days of 90 to 100% chance of rain. I'm very much hoping that Coach McIntyre and his staff will bring it inside to Manley Field House as they did a couple of days last year. But around here, soccer is considered to be an outdoor sport and the SU men's and women's soccer teams practice and play on the wind-swept Hookway Fields, about a mile from the 50,000 seat Carrier Dome, in the worst of weather.

So our strategy will be to layer the kid like an onion with a wind and water-resistant track suit on the outside, a heavier insulating layer layer next, followed by a moisture-wicking base layer on the inside. And in between the base and the insulation will be his regular soccer shorts and shirt. Just like back in the day, when I was an all-weather cyclist, I tell him you can always peel a layer off as your body heats up but if it's not there to begin with, you'll never get warm.

That said, the biggest problem will be getting all the gear back home for the next day and the next and the next. Because even on the most temperate days, there's always a pile of forgotten gear to be sorted through and handed back to its owners at the day's final assembly. Which is often as entertaining as Coach McIntyre's joking around with the kids. And Jason is notorious for leaving behind anything that's not tattooed on his butt anyway.

Oh well, Equipment Manager is just one of the jobs us soccer moms take on when we sign our kids up for these programs. So, for now, I've gotta get back to bed because I'm gonna need my rest for the morning ahead...

Thanks! So far, so good. Our launch went off without a hitch and as soon as we got there he hooked up with a couple of his buddies from the club team that he plays for.

However, as I mentioned, the big challenge of the day lies directly ahead: the daily clothing inventory, LOL.

Hope your day is going well also!
