This Empty House

Thinking about saws, hammers, boards, nails, and making occasional trips to the basement, just to look at what the grandson and I have built, seems like all that's keeping me sane.
I read and then I think, or I think and then I feel, and then, in the next instant, it begins to come apart.
And then, I shut my eyes, as tightly as I can, and maybe sit down, in front of this screen, and write.
After that, at random times, I'll get up and pace, delivering lectures on Hemingway or Zelda or Scott Fitzgerald to the walls of this quite lovely, but also quite empty house.
And I think, will it always be this empty? And then I wonder, a millisecond later, would I want it any other way...
