On the back wall
of Hemingway's study

is a Springbok
or other
trophy head;

it stares at you
across an antique
writing desk

at the center
of the room
and says,

"With these dead eyes
I've seen
more greatness

if you live forever,
will ever know..."

whew! it WAS latin! but i also remember a time when my thought was, "i live, therefore i write." or even, "i write, therefore i live..."

well,there's lots of interesting stuff out there about the writing process. and i was lucky enough, several years ago, to have had a class with a superb teacher and authority on the subject, dr. mary lynch kennedy.

but what i was really commenting on was how important writing has to be, to the individual, to achieve success. and how, even if we've made the necessary commitment, we may not achieve what we feel we've worked for.

still, i want to believe that each of us has something important to say and that each of us, in a given moment, may raise the simple expression of self to the level of art...
