Off I Go

Having decided on the basic configuration of our markman's bench, I've moved on to the specifics of how the various levels of the structure will be supported and joined. Unfortunately, keeping that in my head has quickly become something that I'm not confident of doing without the likelihood of a mistake.

If I'd gone ahead with the 3D CADD program that I'd previously downloaded in a trial version, I'd have no problem simply drawing it to confirm that everything would connect as needed. Unfortunately, I had downloaded the 30-day trial at a time when things were coming apart at home and it actually expired about 18 months before I was in a position to even think about using it.

So I think my next step is going to be the building of an architectural model which will not necessarily be built to scale but will demonstrate what needs to happen at each connecting point in the structure. After that, I could conceivably build one to scale but I'm not really sure that it would be necessary or particularly useful to do that.

In effect, what I'm creating is a sort of bridge between the very rough drawings I've made to sort of map out the design concept and the drawings of individual components which, in a production setting, would be used as drilling diagrams and cutting bills.

Which means it's probably time for me to head off to the Home Depot where I'll peruse the millwork dept. for some molding with a rectangular cross section which can be used to roughly model the 2x4s, 2x6s, and 2x8s that'll be used in the actual construction.

I also need to figure out how I can pin these pieces together so they can be taken apart and reassembled as needed. Which now makes me wonder if I should be heading to a hobby store instead for a supply of balsa wood which can, quite literaly, be joined with the sort of straight pins used in sewing. Not to mention the fact that it's much easier to cut and hopefully cheaper than pine molding.

The only drawback to that would be that I might have to buy a special saw to get sufficiently accurate cuts. And you know how the typical "motorhead" hates to go shopping for tools, lol.

In any case, I need to get myself out the door to discover what's out there so that the project can move on to its next phase. And, oh yeah, while I'm at it I've gotta head into the city to check on the house and shovel the week's snowfall from the sidewalks.

Right now, in fact, there's some added urgency about the "checking on the house" part because, yesterday morning, a car hit a utility pole, a couple of blocks north on James Street, completely severing it and knocking out power in some parts of the surrounding area.

Based on my previous 30-plus years of residency in that part of town, I know that the power grid is so irregularly laid out that it's uncertain whether power may have been lost at the house, which could necessitate restarting the furnace.

What I also know for sure is that we don't need to be dealing with frozen and ruptured water pipes a few months before we hope to be putting the house on the market.

So, with that mission in mind as well, off I go. Just, you know, wish me luck...

Nothing specific in mind really, still drawing but that's not a major project. Think I'm just antsy to get outside and start something out there, have a mosaic in mind. Mostly what I want is the creative energy required for a project. Needing to give a fuck about something.
