Walking in the Heat
Jun. 30th, 2018 11:42 amIt's a lttle past 11:30 AM in The 'Cuse and the outside temp is already 90 degrees. IDK what the heat index is, but it's humid. According to forecasts, tomorrow will be worse, with outside temps reaching 100 degrees and a heat index of 120 or above.
I've just gotten back from the high school track where I walked my usual 17-minute mile. As I was walking in, I met a lady who had just finished her walk and she looked very flushed and uncomfortable. We said a few words--about the weather--in passing, and I figured she'd be OK since she was only a few steps from her car.
Out on the bright green, artificial turf, a young kicker was practicing punts with his coach. The coach was wearing a bright, orange SU jersey, but I doubt he was affiliated. We all have out dreams, I guess. His version of my Mossy Oak gear, no doubt.
Anyway, I did my 4 quarters in 17 and got back in my car for the short ride home. Now, I wonder about the lady I met coming in. The interior of my car felt like an out-of-control pressure cooker when I got in, but I've got pretty good A/C.
Hers was an older car, about the age when the refrigerant has leaked down a bit and maybe the belt that drives the compressor has gotten glazed over or a bit loose or both.
So, I dunno, hope she made it home. Maybe I'll see her tomorrow, but I 'm gonna try to get there earlier. If she's smart, she will too...

Date: 2018-06-30 04:15 pm (UTC)That's why I have my cheap little ellyptical trainer! :-)
Good for you for being concerned about your neighbor.

Date: 2018-06-30 04:35 pm (UTC)My daughter made the comment that it'd be a good thing to have here for the winter, but that was before we had the temps climbing into the nineties.
The thing I really like about it, though, is that it can be set for as much as a 16-degree incline at whatever speed. Which gets me to my aerobic threshold without walking at speeds that cause problems with the joints, etc.
And that's about as much "adventure" as I'm capable of, these days, lol...
