Being Not THAT Guy
Sep. 8th, 2018 04:56 pmShe was absolutely, stunningly beautiful. And standing some distance back, from the sidelines of the game, she smiled at me.
I was some distance away from it too, but standing on a hill where I could see the whole of the field below. Could hear the childrens' voices. Could watch the game, as it was being learned and played, down there on the field.
Her smile seemed to, I dunno, ignite the space between us. And I did know her. Had reason to talk to her. And not about some inane thing that a guy might dream up as he carried his hopes, like a too-warm 7&7 maybe, across some random bar.
She smiled and it froze me there. Not simply because it was breathtaking, dazzling, although it was. And not because we had nothing to say, because we did.
Just, you know, because I didn't want to be THAT guy. The one whose ego or ambition led to, what? A misunderstanding, an embarassing mistake?
The kind which might be remembered by both parties, sometime later, when everything was more certain and there could be no mistake?
About why someone smiled. Or walked across a room and spoke.
And so I stood there, on the hill. Above what was happening on the field below. Pretending, maybe, that I was not THAT guy.
And watched as she walked into the parking lot and drove away...

Date: 2018-09-09 01:57 am (UTC)The thing is, it IS real and as such has little chance of going any further, given what's in the writer's heart and head concerning it. Much like whatever fantasy might later be spun off in the imagination or transpire in real life.
On the other hand, it does suggest to me that I should approach the writing of these things differently than I have recently, as well as being more open to a broader range of meanings within the experiences that I encounter. Which makes me doubly grateful for your comment.
If I were successful at doing that, I think I'd create a longer sort of narrative by matching it with other similarly-themed pieces, as I've done in the past. And I don't totally rule out the possibility of other more, um, "fruitful" encounters in the future.
Because, lol, we live in hope...
