Win, Lose, or Draw

The good thing about my grandson's pre-season soccer scrimmages is that, win, lose, or draw, they get me the morning off, lol. Because, when they have a game in the afternoon, they don't have to practice in the morning. (For some inexplicable reason, I got up at 5:30 anyway. But the point is, I didn't HAVE to, lol.)
This afternoon is another one, an away game this time, and he has to ride the bus to the opponent's school. Which, at least this time, is not too far away. So I'll drop him off at his school this afternoon and then see if I can deal with the cranky lady who lives inside my Garmin in order to drive there myself. Then I'll watch the game, come back home afterwards, and pick him up at the high school.
The last one they played--the first of this pre-season--they lost 5-2. But they were missing several key players due to summer travel with family and summer jobs, which is allowed for. And the school they played was a private school which, while the same size, has no football team to draw down the talent pool for soccer. So they had about twice as many kids to start with and, with the aforementioned absences, we had only one sub. So, after an hour-and-a-half game, our kids were GASSED.
So, not to make excuses, but I think we can look forward to being more competitive once the regular season starts. And, when I dropped the kiddo off for the first practice after that loss, I mentioned something that I'd read on one of my LJ/DW friend's journals. The person quoted said, "I never lose. I either win or I learn something."
I think that's brilliant! I mentioned it to his coach, and he totally agreed. And I hope to carry it with me for the rest of my days as well...
