A day or so before this went down, I was 400-plus pages into my reading of Mary Beard's "SPQR," her account of the rise and fall of the Roman Republic and the subsequent rise and fall of the Roman Empire--including mention of the "12 Caesars" and other key players.
And I'd been struck, the whole time I'd been reading, at the similarities between what is known and surmised about life over that long and distant time in human history and what is happening now, in and to our own republic.
