Question for My Automotive Instructors

If a gasoline or diesel-fueled power plant is properly called an "engine," and electrically-energized power plants are properly called "motors," why have the drivers of most of the vehicles which have been on the road since the early 1900s not been called "enginists" instead of "motorists?"

Because this is English, where the plural of mouse is mice but the plural of house is houses, not hice.
