Prediction

My wife called me from work to say that she'd be getting a ride home from Christine. She went in at 3 PM on her day off because they were short-staffed. She was supposed to work a half shift and then come home. Then she called to say she'd be a little later than planned because she needed to work on the schedule. And that Christine would be giving her a ride.

Christine is twenty or so years younger than my wife, married, and the mother of two young kids. She's also a problem gambler who missed her thirteen year old daughter's first soccer game to spend her day off at the casino. My wife is fond of relating anecdotes from Christine's disastrous life, I think to convince me, and maybe herself, that by comparison she doesn't have a problem.

My guess is that, within the hour, she'll walk into the house and announce that Christine has convinced her to go to the casino with her so she doesn't have to drive alone. After all, our daughter is out with her boyfriend and our grandson is at his mom's, so nobody's really at home this evening. 

Nobody, that is, who counts. Which pretty well sums up the current state of our relationship...
