Their Biggest Day
Jun. 27th, 2005 12:19 amThe party was also attended by two classmates who hadn't graduated because they'd been stoned, drunk or otherwise absent for a good part of high school.
None of these kids went to great schools. They all grew up in a part of the city that's been increasingly marginalized over the years. But my daughter and her friend made consistently better choices, during that time, than their two classmates.
One of those choices, apparently, was to drop out of the circle of friends that included the other two. I realized this as I struggled to put faces with the names when they were first mentioned.
And when they came into the house, just before leaving, it seemed all they had to show for themselves was their latest body piercings which, while mildly exotic, didn't really have the shock value they'd obviously hoped.
The sad thing is that, inside of it all, they're probably still nice kids. Sadder still is that the biggest day of their lives will be the one when they finally figure out what they've irrevocably missed...
