I Sing the Body Electric
Oct. 8th, 2006 09:27 amOK, this is the morning. I paid eleven bucks to have a one gig dual in-line memory module shipped overnight so I could stick it in my laptop, download the 30-day trial copy of Autocad 2007, and have it up and running by my next class.
I spent another ten, yesterday, on a grounding strap at Radio Shack. The theory is, if the computer chasis is grounded through an electrical outlet, and your body is connected to the chasis, via the grounding strip, you won't inadvertently fry the new memory--or other components--with a jolt of static electricity traveling from you to the computer.
Now, I'm down wid' it up to where the computer stays plugged in whilst I be workin' on it. But right there is where I stop worrying about my $200 mem module and start worrying about whatever might inadvertently travel the other way.
So, if either me or my computer gets zapped, this may be my last post for a while. However, I am comforted by the vision of my wife casually stepping over my charred remains on the way to getting her second cup of wake-up, no doubt muttering, "The asshat could've gotten my coffee first..."
