So on the way back from my foray into town to check on the house, which was in fact OK, I stopped at a store called Michael's, which carries a wide variety of art and craft supplies, and found the balsa wood, razor saw, and mini miter box that I need to make the "architectural model" that I've been contemplating.

That's the good news. The bad news, which cannot under any circumstance be shared with my daughter, is that, between the tools and materials, I spent almost as much as I'd figured on for the full-sized project. And that's not even the worst of it.

I allowed myself to rationalize the whole thing with the argument that my granddaughter Sophia, who is in reality an amazingly "crafty" kid, would be able to make good use of this stuff once I no longer need it. What an absolutely shameless way to use an innocent child! Even though it's undoubtedly true.

Another way that I'll be attempting to justify this fiscally irresponsible behavior is by building an exact scale model of the project, which should help me to spot any other problems in its design.

Not having foreseen this turn of events, I didn't bring from the house the drawing, scaling, measuring tools that I'd saved from the classes I'd taken, many years ago, in architectural technology. But I think I've got enough, right here, to get started tomorrow, the main thing being the three-sided architect's scale which I'll need to transfer measurements from my rough drawings to the balsa components of the model.

Anyway, I'm actually looking forward to it because it's something I've never done before. And I promise that I'll take very good care of Sophia's new craft tools. You know, the ones that she doesn't even know are hers, lol...
