SSA Tryout
Oct. 27th, 2013 10:39 pmJason had his tryout with SSA (Syracuse Soccer Academy) this afternoon. It's something he's been wanting to do, in part because of his impatience with the quality and commitment of the players on his Fusion team. That, and the fact that despite considerable talent among their first-team players, they can't seem to find a way to win.
The hour-long tryout included stretches, ball handling and passing drills, and finally a 4v4 scrimmage. And there were almost as many SSA coaches observing and taking notes as there were players trying out.
Anyway, there were eight kids trying out, although I suspect at least one of them was a "ringer" from one of SSA's Junior Soccer Association teams, put there to provide a challenge, or perhaps a benchmark, for potential new players. She really set the standard in the opening drills, but was teamed with Jason in the scrimmage.
At the end of it, the boys' U11 coach came over and asked if he could see me in the meeting room away from the other parents. When the door was closed, he told me that all the coaches had remarked on Jason's ball handling skills and on what a good all-around player he was.
He initially wanted Jason to do a few trial practices with the team, on Monday and Wednesday, to see if he seemed comfortable and a good mutual fit. But I reminded him that we have SU Soccer Academy on Mondays so he said he'd have the team manager arrange something different for us.
So the bottom line is that his tryout was successful, with all the coaches smiling and friendly as we passed by on our way to the door. Which means that we've now gotta decide if this is it, if after a year at CNY Family Sports Center it's time for movin' on.
As far as Jason is concerned, it definitely is...
