World Cup Soccer in the Carrier Dome
Apr. 8th, 2015 09:22 amJust dropped the grandson off at Syracuse University's Manley Field House for the third day of his spring break soccer camp. And I was thinking how cool it is that these kids actually begin networking around their initial meeting as competitors, in youth leagues and tournaments, and then follow up as fellow campers and friends at events like this one.
As usual, the program is well-organized and well-run, with coaches and players from the Division I men's and women's soccer teams dividing the kids up, setting the routines, organizing the drills, and then coaching the World Cup competitions they run in the afternoon.
Today is something special because instead of the older kids heading out to the SU practice fields, they'll be taken in Athletic Department vans down the hill to the Carrier Dome where all of the university's major events except, ironically, soccer games are held. And this is probably a good day for the Dome visit because we seem to be getting the first of that cold rain we've been promised for the latter part of the week.
Anyway, all seems to be going well. Jason had said he was going to ask to be transfered to another team, per pro soccer protocol, because he was unhappy with the prospects of the one he was originally assigned to. (They went 0-3-1 the first day; his new team went 1-2-1 yesterday, not a tremendous improvement but I think he's happier with his teammates.)
Looking forward to the stories that I'll eventually hear after pickup this afternoon. He usually takes awhile to process the day's events but once he does that he's pretty animated in telling about them. Also hoping for the best in the World Cup, LOL...
