Grip-Sh*t

Speaking of my history as a cyclist reminds me of a conversation I had last fall with Jack, one of my physical therapy guys who competes in local triathalons, about the possibility of getting the bike out and riding again. (The back would never have handled that before the surgery.) He said that he saw no reason why I shouldn't, as long as I felt sufficiently healed before trying it. My last X-rays showed the area where my bone graft was harvested to be filling in nicely, and the pain has diminished to almost nil, so I think I might be ready.

Only thing is, the bike's been sitting for almost ten years and I'd spent my last six months on it cursing my decision to convert to Grip-Shift gear shifters. It got so bad that I'd been calling them "Grip-Sh*t" every time I mentioned them. And I vowed that before the next season I'd convert back to the Shimano Rapid-Fires I'd had when the bike was new.

Unfortunately, we're probably talking a buck-fifty at a decent bike shop for a set of 24-speed Rapid-Fires and the only shop that handles Cannondale bikes around here is in Baldwinsville. In other words, I could probably buy a brand new, full-suspension Huffy at the local Wal-Mart for what my shifters would cost me. But I think I'd rather ride ten miles on a strand of razor wire. Although, having never tried that, I suppose that I should maybe stop being an elitist pr*ck long enough to reconsider...
