For anyone who wants to understand the mess we're in, in Iraq, (or for anyone who does not yet understand that we are, indeed, in one hell of a mess in Iraq), William Langewiesche's article, "Rules of Engagement," in the November Vanity Fair, is must reading.

Before you blog another word, pro or con, on the subject, before you bid goodbye or welcome home another person whose life has cycled through the place, and, most certainly, before you cast your ballot in the upcoming elections, read this article.

Although its central focus is on the alleged killing of unarmed civilians by U.S. Marines in Haditha, al-Anbar Province, Iraq, it examines this horrific event in the broader context of our stategies and policies in conducting the war. This is important because, in that context, the events in Haditha clearly show why we have not, and cannot, win this war as it is currently being conducted.

Worse, it strongly suggests that this war, if it was ever winnable in the context of a reality of which the administration in Washington has remained shockingly unaware, it no longer is.

Friends, neo-Romans, countrymen, if there was ever a matter that needed to be understood at its root cause, this is certainly it. If there was ever a time in our nation's history when it needed to call upon an informed electorate, that time is now. If there was ever a resource, widely accessible and eminently readable, William Langewiesche's article in Vanity is it...
