By early this afternoon, I had the kitchen cleaned up, the groceries bought, and the veggies cut up for the chili I was making for the dinner my grandson and I share on Sundays when he comes here to wash his clothes.

As I was getting ready to leave the house to pick him up, I noticed I was almost out of chili powder so decided to stop at the store, which is on the way. And that's where I was when my cell phone rang.

"Hey Poppa, where are you?"

"At the store."

'My mom and Jeremy just got a washer and dryer, so I won't be coming over to do my clothes today."

"Oh. Well, tell them I said congratulations."

"OK, thanks. Maybe I can come for dinner tomorrow night, after my basketball game."

"OK, see you then. Love you, bye."

"Love you, bye."

In the meantime, I'd been invited to dinner at my daughter and son-in-law's and had turned down the invitation due to the now-cancelled laundry day. Luckily, I was able to get the dinner invite reinstated and afterwards I'll be going to watch the granddaughter's Sunday night soccer training at the Pine Grove Country Club.

Which takes care of today. Still to be answered is the question of whether the kid will now commit to any sort of regular work schedule here or if that's also down the drain, so to speak, with laundry day. And whether, as I've suggested he should, he'll use that opportunity to earn the money for his mom's Christmas present.

Because, as I think he learned with respect to his laundry, these things are now more and more up to him...
