Mall Walking

This morning, it appears that I'm going to learn about mall walking. And, no, it's not the newest permutation of the world's oldest profession.

It's what you do when it continues to rain, as it has all night in the northeast, and you don't belong to a health club and someone will be sleeping in the room where the treadmill is located and you still need to get your three miles worth of daily exercise.

I've been told that there are at least three local malls that have mall walker programs. According to my source, who I will protect at all costs, you choose one of them, go to the information kiosk, and get a map of the course, including distances, etc.

So, if you're at Shoppingtown or the Carousel or Great Northern, and you see some old guy with red hair and fire in his eyes, ya better getcher children and pets outa the way or it won't be pretty. (I bruise so easily these days...)

when i worked in a mall (it happened once, i lasted 3 months), i'd see mall walkers all the time. i admired their dedication, but i wouldn't be able to keep up the pace. i get so sidetracked people watching in malls, and if the mall population be sparse, and i can actually see the window displays... pfft. dark glasses might help. features would maybe be obscured enough not to distract.

that's funny. i used to watch the old folks too and wonder at the aggressive pace and the attitude that said, "don't f*ck with me, sonny, or i'll knock you on your a**."

then, when i was out there myself for the first time, i noticed that i was the only one walking like that. the rest seemed sort of old and tired and sad.

maybe it's simply that i was the youngest of them. or maybe there were lots of stories out there that i couldn't know about because i was so intent on keeping the pace.

because of, you know, "time's wing-ed chariot hurtling near..."
