Untouchable [a false start]
Nov. 6th, 2008 02:12 pmAll you had to do was look at them to know they were untouchable. Or, you could ask Jack Meyers. He was a college sophomore, a section leader in his fourth year of drum corps.
Jack had thought he was untouchable. That if anyone were to do any touching, it would be him. And so he tried it with the new girl. The one who'd come all the way from Europe to march in American drum corps and had already acquired an American boyfriend. That other pain-in-the-ass newbie in the horn section.
The "smack," as she bitch-slapped him across the side of his face, had been heard all the way to the front of the bus. And later that night, at the cook truck, the laughter had likewise traveled the whole length of the serving line when he asked for a bag of ice.
In spite of his ego, which he now understood served him best when performing on the field, Jack was able to laugh at himself and later said that she'd hit him so hard the snot flew out of his nose. Which resulted in more laughter but at least, this time, he was the one making the joke.
[Now that I've done it, I realize that, in some very compelling ways, I really don't want to commit this to paper...]
