I've used this, in the past, to commemorate other deeply-felt losses. And I guess, because there have been none more deeply felt than this, I've decided to use it again.

And, as I've also mentioned in the past, it's best viewed full-screen on YouTube in order to best appreciate the onstage choreography, which is important to the meaning of the piece...

"Loss" from the musical Blast!

Soloist Ben Harloff.

Original composition by jazz legend Don Elliot.

In preparation for his performance of this piece, Harloff was told to "play it as if it were the last song that he'd ever play."

I sometimes think that this would be good advice about the way we choose to live our lives.

I sometimes think that and wish that I'd done so, more often, in my own.

So that, when the losses came, as they inevitably do, they'd not have brought with them such profound regret...

[Note: This clip is better viewed on YouTube where it originated and where it can be viewed on full screen. It's a very lo-res clip to begin with, the stage lighting is quite low throughout, and the choreography that's happening onstage, below the soloist, is as important as the music which accompanies it. That's owing, I think, to the fact that this show and its cast have their origins in Drum Corps International, the performers in this original cast production having aged-out of Star of Indiana and other world-class drum corps.]
